The college application process can be confusing, especially to students like me who don’t have a specific college in mind or know exactly what is required/wanted on most applications. Luckily, I was able to conduct an exclusive interview with Dawn Blanchard, a professional college advisor who has worked in undergraduate admissions at Duke and UNC, in the college counseling offices at two high schools, directed a Duke summer college prep program, and in total has served students for four decades.
Q: What is one thing that students overestimate the importance of for their college application?
A: “Many students think incorrectly that doing tons of extracurricular activities is necessary for gaining admission to college but actually, sustained involvement in a few solid activities can be more impactful.”
Q: What is one thing that students underestimate the importance of for their college application?
A: ”I find that future college applicants underestimate how a strong course load affects their chances for admission. They may not realize that in addition to earning the best grades possible, taking the most challenging courses possible at their particular high school can make the difference.“
Q: What is one simple thing that students can do that improves their chances of getting into their dream college drastically?
A: “Being authentic and thoughtful about choosing “right match” colleges for themselves improves students’ chances of getting in. As my former boss used to say, “it’s a match to be made, not a prize to be won.” This perspective reduces making applications to too many “reach” institutions.“
Q: What is one thing that students should always include in their essay?
A: “I never say “always” regarding what essays should include because the emphasis or focus of every one of them is and should be unique to the writer. However, where applicable, I recommend that students include an honest portrayal of their own experiences, including the valuable lessons they learned.”
Q: What is one thing that students should never include in their essay?
A: “Arrogance, “sour grapes,” and/or a negative portrayal of themselves or others, are not a good look in an essay. “
Q: What is one piece of advice that you would give to a student who feels like they’re falling behind?
A: “Any student who feels they are falling behind should ask for and get the help they need, ASAP, to avoid an unnecessary downward spiral. Receiving tutoring from a skilled friend or professional may lift you up just enough to help you stay with it. Doing your best, not falling into a victim mentality, may be just the ticket. And remember, failure can be a gift.“
Q: What is one piece of advice that you would give to every student applying to get into a college?
A: “My advice is to remember that you are searching for the best place for you—your true self—to grow and learn over the next four years. In the end, it’s not really a competition, it’s you engaging fully in a wonderful part of your life journey.“
