One of the largest mysteries plaguing the US right now is what happens behind the closed doors of J210 in the Cedar Ridge hallways every Friday (and every other Monday) between the hours of 12:00 - 12:30 pm. Searching for answers, our highly praised interviewer, Daniel Marsh, interviewed Will and Chris.
His first question was simple: “What do you do in a Poker Club?” Will’s response, however, was simpler:
“Poker.”
Despite how short the answer was, there’s a lot we can get from it. A response this short could indicate that there’s more to this story than just “poker,” but to keep that part hidden, Will chose to say the bare minimum. It could also mean that they just play poker. As each is equally likely, further investigation is needed.
“What’s the best hand you’ve seen this year?”
“Full house.”
This answer all but proves that they play poker during poker, as a full house is a real hand where you have a pair and a three-of-a-kind. Being one of the best hands out there, it’s very rare, so the only way to get one would be by playing a lot of poker.
“What percentage of gamblers quit right before they hit the jackpot?”
Will responded “Hopefully none of them,” and Chris said “99 percent.”
This question was more of an advisory to all gamblers than anything else. Remember, the difference between you and a substantially richer version of you is just one spin!
Here is when I began to get an idea of what Poker Club was all about, but to be sure, I had to ask Chris one more question: What does poker mean to you?
“Poker is a great way to tell unintelligent, uneducated people apart from intelligent, smart, creative thinking people. At the end of the day, the people who make profits/make money are the real winners.”
And there it was. In saying that the people who make profits are the real winners, he proved my point: Poker Club is about gambling (although they don’t use real money, gambling on school grounds isn’t super legal). But Poker Club is about more than that. It’s about hanging out with friends (while gambling), meeting new people (while gambling), and having fun playing poker, or teaching those who don’t know how to (gamble) play. So if you want a good time on Fridays (and every other Monday), come on down to Mr. Watson's room during Ridge Time for some good old poker time!
