Day in the Life of an IB Student

A large part of the freshman and sophomore population of Cedar Ridge are looking to go into the International Baccalaureate program, however we don’t know what a typical day looks like. Luckily, an IB student named Cyani Jacobs was nice enough to provide a written account of a typical day for her, which will hopefully help us learn what to expect in the future.

Day in the Life of an IB Student (Senior)

Hey! My name is Cyani Jacobs and I am a Full IB Senior here at Cedar Ridge. A typical school day for me normally consists of the usual four classes, club time, lunchtime, and sports, but my schedule definitely varies as an IB student.

Starting off with my mornings, As a Junior, I would typically wake up between 6 and 6:45 am to ensure that I would have enough time to get ready for the day, eat breakfast, and complete homework that I may have forgotten about the night before. Now, as a Senior, I have realized that I would be more productive and less stressed if I completed my homework the night before, allowing me to wake up later at around 7:15 am.

During the school day, my classes rotate every other day, meaning that one day (A day) I would have one set of classes, like IB Math, IB English, IB Biology, and IB Theory of Knowledge, and the other day (B day), I would have IB Study Hall, IB History, IB Spanish, and IB Music. Even though it is almost double the size of a standard schedule, the class rotation allows adequate time for completing homework and other activities that are beneficial for students.

I still have time throughout my day to participate in various extracurricular activities, including Winter and Spring sports and student organizations. Most of my club activities occur during Ridgetime. While it is important to utilize Ridgetime to receive that extra help from teachers, I still manage to be involved within our school community. During the winter sports season, except for game or meet days, I arrive home a little after 6:30 pm, which allotts me four hours for dinner, homework, and some time to relax, finish my homework, etc. During spring however, my practice time is significantly shorter, allowing me to arrive home at around 5:45 pm.

As an IB student, I heavily value the time I spend with extracurricular activities. Sometimes, especially if you are a Full IB Student, it can seem like you are always around the same people; and while it brings us together as a community, it is important to engage with everyone outside of IB as well. Sports and school activities allow me to do so!

I hope sharing my current experience inspired you to consider being a part of Cedar Ridge’s IB Program. While my experience is very similar to my peers’, it is important to remember that everyone’s workload, school-life, and overall IB experience is different and unique.
